Strength
Gaining strength is largely about learning to produce tension: neural adaptations, the big lifts and intensity.
Strength vs. hypertrophy
Strength is the ability to produce tension; hypertrophy is size. They overlap (more muscle allows more strength) but they are not the same: much of your strength, especially early on, comes from nervous system adaptations rather than new muscle.
How to apply it
- For strength, train heavy and specific on the big lifts
- For size, prioritise volume in the middle range
Neural adaptations
The nervous system improves by recruiting more motor units, firing them faster and coordinating muscles better. That is why a beginner gains strength within weeks with barely any change in size: they are learning to use what they already have.
How to apply it
- Practise the lifts frequently in order to 'learn' them
- Technique is strength training, not a prerequisite for it
Specificity
You get strong at what you practise: the specific pattern, range and speed. To raise your squat, squat; accessories help the muscles involved, but they do not replace practising the target lift.
How to apply it
- Train the lift you want to improve, not just variations of it
- Use accessories to shore up weak points
Intensity and low rep ranges
Maximal strength develops best with heavy loads (≥85% 1RM, ~1–5 reps) that teach your body to produce maximal tension. You do not need to live on singles: most people progress with sets of 3–6 at a good effort.
How to apply it
- Include heavy work of 1–5 reps on the big lifts
- Leave 1–2 reps in reserve almost always; heavy failure is very fatiguing
Long rest periods
To lift heavy you need to recover your phosphocreatine system and your focus. Rests of 3–5 min between heavy sets give you more quality reps and better performance than short rests.

- Rest 3–5 min between heavy sets of the big lifts
- Do not rush: the quality of each set is what rules in strength work
The big lifts
The squat, bench press, deadlift and overhead press move a lot of load with a lot of muscle: they are the backbone of a strength plan. Their technique is mastered with practice and gradual progression, not by forcing personal records.
How to apply it
- Base your plan on 2–4 big lifts and progress them consistently
- Learn the technique with manageable loads before pushing
Strength periodisation
Alternating blocks of higher volume (accumulation) with heavier, lower-volume blocks (intensification), and shedding fatigue, lets you keep progressing once linear progression runs out. It is especially useful for intermediates and advanced lifters.
How to apply it
- When you stop adding weight every session, move to block progression
- Schedule deloads so you can express the strength you have built
Strength and long-term health
Strength is not just performance: grip and leg strength predict mortality and independence in old age. Strength training protects your bones, joints and muscle mass throughout your life.
How to apply it
- Keep some heavy work going always, at any age
- Think of strength as an investment in your future independence
